Forestville was settled by Europeans in the 1860s. By 1900 the community was known for attracting writers and artists and had a bohemian reputation. The town's unofficial motto is "Forestville, The Good Life" which can be spotted in a variety of places in the area. It is about 60 miles north of San Francisco and comprises well over five square miles of land stretching from Sebastopol to Guerneville. It was once named as the "Second Home Capital" of the country by The New York Times.
