Roughly 20 miles from the coast, the hamlet of Graton marks the farthest of southeastern expansion for Russian colonization. Farms and ranches were established in the valley between Purrington creek near Occidental to the area now know as Graton to support Russian fur trading activities at For Ross. Barracks were erected. In addition to wheat, vegetables and fruit, a large vineyard was developed.
In 2010, Graton had a population of 1,707 in 680 households in an area of approximately 1.6 square miles. It is an unincorporated area in Sonoma County.
It is a wine growing region and part of the Green Valley AVA. The small "town" is only one
